Today, with an estimated population of 62,570, Missouri City has expanded considerably. Located mostly into Fort Bend County with a small portion in Harris County, some 17,069 households. The Fort Bend County portion of Missouri City is served by Fort Bend Independent School District, while the Harris County portion is served by Houston Independent School District.
According to year 2000 census data, the median income for a Missouri City household is $77,762, well above the median income for the Houston Metro Area as a whole. With the benefit of the railroad, Missouri City was already a commuter city for residents who, by train, commuted to adjacent towns like Staffords Point and Sugar Land to work.
The increasing use of the automobile along with road improvements including highways attracted a wealth of newcomers to Missouri City. A new generation of commuters was born and by the 1950s, the town was a popular "bedroom community" of Houston. Missouri City has offers a plentiful stock of primarily single family housing stock, a unique feature area suburbs. Unlike neighboring Houston, Missouri City has been a zoned since 1981.
